The CPU-mining obsession

CFB and Satoshi share an unusual, specific conviction — that ordinary CPUs, not GPUs, are what mining should protect.

The thread. Come-from-Beyond has hated GPU mining for over a decade. Not on aesthetics — on principle. His whole design needs the idle processors of ordinary people, and GPUs break that.

Points toward Satoshi

Within months of arriving he wrote off Bitcoin on this exact point: “Now there is no point to mine BTC with CPU,” because “GPU-miners make unprofitable to mine with CPU.” Every project since — NXT, Qubic’s “useful proof of work,” Aigarth — restates the same CPU doctrine.

Satoshi shared the rarest part of this view. He wanted “anybody [to] download Bitcoin and start mining with their laptop,” and famously kept GPU-mining code in reserve, reluctant to optimize it so as not to price out CPU miners. Two people, the same unusual priority, in the same narrow window.

Points against

Anti-GPU sentiment wasn’t unique — many early miners resented the GPU takeover. Sharing a value is not sharing an identity. And CFB’s stated reason (fuel for distributed AI) is not Satoshi’s stated reason (broad participation).

Weight

A genuine fingerprint, but a soft one: a strong shared conviction, not proof. It matters most in combination with the rest.
